Ombra Fedele Anchio - from the opera Idaspe" ("Farinelli" film soundtrack)-9-35 min
An incredibly beautiful piece of music, Ombra Fedele Anchio from the opera Idaspe, written by Ricardo Broschi (1698-1756) for his younger brother, Carlo Broschi , the castrato known as Farinelli. This version is from the soundtrack to the film Farinelli. For the film, the castrato voice was created by digitally blending the vocal performances of a countertenor and soprano, Derek Lee Ragin and Ewa Malas-Godlewska (a kinder and gentler way to produce the castrato sound!). This music is heart and soul-piercing. A great movie if you like this kind of stuff.

You can find many clips from the film on youtube. Here is one:

Cecilia Bartoli-Lascia ch'io pianga-5.52 aria

Cecilia Bartoli - Ombra Mai Fu (FULL)- 3.31 min
From her marvelous treasure of an album, "Sacrificium"
Sacrificium, Deluxe Edition
The story behind it is that the album is a tribute to the castrati, the male sopranos/mezzos/contraltos of the baroque period. They didn't really sound like women in timbre (according to articles of the time) but the PITCH of their voices was what we would consider now a woman's territory. This song - well, along with "Lascia ch'io pianga" - is the best I've ever heard. I'm also an American and I appreciate Ms Bartoli immensely. The color of her voice, her virtuosity, and her mature interpretations. And this must be the most profound performance of Ombra mai fu I have ever heard... can't wait to buy this album. And almost most of all, I love her for paying tribute to the castrati. Vincenzo A Birli hace 4 meses

Signorina Bartoli, has such a Beautiful well trained voice, that I take my hat off to her mother who has trained her extremely well. Bravissimo Signora Bartoli

Cecilia Bartoli - Casta Diva...Ah bello a me ritorna

(Studio Version, 2013)-12 min- Bellini-Norma-Act1

The great mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli singing her very unique take on this iconic operatic role. She uses very interesting ornaments in the middle and middle-low registers, as supposedly the original Norma (Giuditta Pasta) did. Whatever your opinion is about Cecilia in this role, it is undeniable this is the operatic event of the year.

Bartoli, Sacrificium, "Cadrò, ma qual si mira", Francesco Araia.- 6.15 min

Cadrò, ma qual si mira
Parte cader dal monte
Della sassosa fronte
Che quant'a lei s'oppone
Urta, fracassa e seco
Precipitando va.

E se non resta oppresso
Dalla fatal ruina,
Sente da lunge anch'esso
Attonito 'l pastore
Lo strepito del colpo
Ch'impallidir lo fa.

castrati singing 04.wmv-3.06 min
Farinelli is a 1994 biopic film about the life and career of Italian opera singer Farinelli, considered one of the greatest castrato singers of all time. It stars Stefano Dionisi as Farinelli and was directed by Belgian director Gérard Corbiau.

Although Dionisi provided the speaking voice, Farinelli's singing voice was provided by a soprano, Ewa Malas-Godlewska and a countertenor, Derek Lee Ragin, who were recorded separately then digitally merged to recreate the sound of a castrato.

Although based on real life events, some dramatic license is taken. For example, Farinelli's brother is given much importance and Porpora is de-emphasized, while the movie offers a different explanation for how Carlo Broschi came to take the stage name Farinelli. George Frideric Handel, played by Jeroen Krabbé, is made out to be somewhat of a villain, but this is based on the competition between the theater at which Handel's music was played and the theater at which Farinelli sang.

The film was directed by Belgian Gérard Corbiau. Its musical director was the French harpsichordist and conductor Christophe Rousset. The musical recording was made at the concert hall "L'Arsenal" in Metz, with the orchestra Les Talens Lyriques.

Philippe Jaroussky, City Recital Hall, Angel Place, Sydney, July 2007.

Sì dolce è il tormento che in seno mi sta
ch'io vivo contento per cruda beltà...
nel ciel di bellezza s'accreschi fierezza et manchi pietà
che sempre qual scoglio all'onda d'orgoglio mia fede sarà...

La speme fallace rivolgami il piè
diletto né pace non scendano a me

Ferrari...)in the Festival de Froville" near Nancy. Philippe's voice was incredibly pure and was flying in the small church. The Sance's Stabat Mater was a moment of pain and beauty together, nearly intolerable. "Si dolce il tormento" was the last "bis" and we all hoped that it would never ending...An unforgettable memory

Philippe Jaroussky " The most beautiful baroque Arias"- 91 minutos

Philippe Jaroussky (born 13 February 1978 in Maisons-Laffitte, France) is a French countertenor. He began his musical career with the violin, winning an award at the Versailles conservatory and then took up the piano before turning to singing. He is noted for a virtuosic coloratura technique and for compelling and enlivened interpretations of baroque cantatas and operas.
Jaroussky was inspired to sing by the Martinique-born countertenor Fabrice di Falco.[2] He received his diploma from the Early Music Faculty of the Conservatoire de Paris. Since 1996, he has studied singing with Nicole Fallien. He has formed his own ensemble called Artaserse, and also often performs with the Ensemble Matheus under Jean-Christophe Spinosi and with L'Arpeggiata under Christina Pluhar.
Here a great concert recorded by MEZZO TV at the palace of Versailles in 1999.
